MIRTOS:
Although it's off the beaten tourist track, the little coastal hamlet of Mirtos does have one claim to fame- it's the most southerly settlement in the whole of greece. Reached by a turning off the south coast road, 16 kilometer west of Ierapetra, the village's long beach looks over the beautiful Libyan Sea. Popular by the Greeks themselves as a beachside retreat away from the crowds, Mirtos has a sleepy feel for most of the summer, and make an excellent base for exploring the south-east corner of Crete by rented car. Walkers will enjoy exploring the hill country around the fertile Mirtos river valley, one of the most beautiful on Crete. There is a small Minoan site nearby as well as an Bronze Age settlement. The small boulevard offers you a number of fine tavernas. Relaxing into the slow pace of Cretan village life with a good book, civilised company, is what holidays to Crete are all about. |
