These are `storybook' cottages in every sense of the word! Arthur Ransome wrote some of Swallows and Amazons whilst living in the farmhouse here; the house was used as a location in a film of the story; and some of the indoor scenes were shot in one of the cottages. Carefully converted and comfortably furnished, the properties are set near the owner's Lakeland farmhouse only 150 m from the farm's own half-mile stretch of Coniston shoreline. Bank Ground Cottages form part of a working farm which extends to 60 acres and runs down to the water's edge - an ideal location for fishing, sailing, wind-surfing and canoeing. The three cottages command uninterrupted views over the lake towards the village of Coniston and its magnificent backdrop of Lakeland fells, and there are launching points for dinghies, and mooring space for larger craft (which can be launched on the opposite bank) by arrangement. Adjacent to the cottages, the owner's guest house has a bar available to visitors. This storybook setting continues at the pretty village of Hawkshead once the home of Beatrix Potter, and John Ruskin lived at nearby Brantwood. >From the farm, footpaths lead along the lake, climbing to lofty fells; nearby is Coniston Old Man (3 km) and Tarn Hows, with excellent walking also in Grizedale Forest. Coniston village (3 km). The restored steam yacht Gondola cruises the lake and historic travel of another kind can be enjoyed on the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Steam Railway.
