It has its own wooded fellside garden with a stream (toddlers beware!) and a gravelled sitting-out area, as well as a games room with table tennis. Reached via a footbridge over the beck, it is very comfortably furnished and well equipped, and provides an excellent holiday base for large family groups all the year round. Visitors have the use of the nearby owner's private lake frontage (across a country lane), and can hire a sailing dinghy on a daily basis, as well as canoes, mountain bikes and a selection of small boats with outboard motors. 3 km away, Pooley Bridge has shops, inns and restaurants, whilst the market town of Penrith (13 km) offers more extensive shopping, as well as a cinema, swimming-pool, tennis and golf. Enthusiasts for boating and keen walkers and climbers will be delighted with the opportunities offered. An exceptional local circular walk includes the optional ascent of 390 m Hallin Fell, whose summit gives an aerial view of the lake which Wordsworth called 'the happiest combination of beauty and grandeur'. Across the water, Aira Force is the most dramatic of a series of waterfalls plunging down a wooded chasm. Visitors to nearby Gowbarrow Park (NT) may be walking in the steps of the poet himself, as this is where he saw his host of golden daffodils. A regular steamer travels the sinuous length of Ullswater and calls at Howtown on the way south to Glenridding, once a lead-mining village, whose history is re-created at an information centre.
